About
MS-ing Around

We empower women & adolescent girls living with an autoimmune diagnosis through education, MENTORSHIP, self-advocacy, & community engagement - SUPPORTING them in CURATING lives with
joy, confidence, & ease beyond the disease.

MS-ing Around is a Hyde Park Chicago-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded by comedic speaker & creative artist Kellye Howard-Jue, who was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2013.

WHAT WE DO:

Through our three pillars—Education, Empowerment, and Community Engagement—MS-ing Around strives to redefine and reframe the hopeless narrative that often follows an autoimmune diagnosis. We provide accessible educational resources, creative events, and inclusive gatherings that foster humor, healing, and honest connection. Our work also includes raising awareness and advocating for equitable health policies that support women and adolescents in marginalized communities living with a range of autoimmune conditions.

JANUARY WELLNESS TIPS

GRACE & GRATITUDE:

Regulating stress reduces inflammation. Reducing inflammation can make a bad day a better one.

According to the American Brain Foundation: The amygdala, a component of the limbic system, is involved in emotional processing and fear responses. When we make gratitude a regular practice, the amygdala activates the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS), which counteracts the “fight-or-flight” response of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) in times of stress.

LET'S GET MOVING:

Regular exercise reduces inflammation markers and improves symptoms like fatigue, mood, and disease severity across various autoimmune conditions, with the greatest benefits from combining different exercise modes. Talk a walk on days when the weather is being nice to us or challenge yourself to do some morning stretches for 3-5 minutes for four or more days a week this month. Every little bit counts.

PRO TIP: Invite a friend to a challenge and do it together, even if over facetime or Google Meet, where there's a will, there's a way.

YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT

As someone with an autoimmune dis-ease, you've likely read about turmeric, and ginger and all the things we should be including in our diets to ensure we are giving our bodies a fighting chance to combat inflammation. We are not the gurus on diet, and it's a daily battle to do what's best especially during the holiday season. As we embark upon this fresh start in 2026, MS-ing Around challenges you to eat as clean as possible for your particular diagnosis at least 2 days per week. Let's all agree to start there. If we are what we eat...call me Ms. Chocolate 🤷🏾‍♀️

Here's a great article with some easy recipes. Let us know if you try any of them.
